Five Honolulu residents financed a radio ad that criticized Democratic gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie for not declaring a religious affiliation.

The ad aired on Christian-format stations and was sponsored by a group called Island Values.

Its deputy treasurer is Honolulu lawyer Kenneth Wong, who sat on an exploratory committee that was established last year for Abercrombie’s rival, Democrat Mufi Hannemann.

The group’s financial report filed with the state Thursday showed that Wong contributed $1,000 in mid-August. Four others each gave the same, including Outrigger Hotels executive Melvin Kaneshige and Ernest Lum, a construction company executive.

The report does not list spending for a flier that Hannemann has disavowed.
