Kid chef digs local fare

It’s good to start the kids young.

To mark the upcoming Kanu Hawaii Eat Local Challenge, "exec-kid" chef Duke Kenney, son of chef Ed Kenney of Town and Downtown @the HISAM, will demonstrate how to prepare a healthy meal using locally grown ingredients.

The 9-year-old will show off his culinary skills at Waialae Elementary School with the help of "assistant chef" Ed Kenney.

The demo runs 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. Sept. 22. Call 733-4883 by Tuesday to reserve a spot.

Kokua Hawaii Foundation is among the sponsors of the event.

Library hosts ‘pickle lady’

Author Leonora Ching of "The Pickle Lady’s Pickle Passion" will demonstrate easy recipes at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Hawaii State Library.

Ching has become known locally for pickling and preserving a variety of food such as fruits, vegetables, eggs and shrimp.

Get meal ideas and fish tips

Learn fresh back-to-school cooking ideas from chef Johan Svensson of BLT Steak Waikiki in a class on Saturday.

Svensson will go over quick meal variations and also share how to choose, scale, gut, fillet and grill different types of fish.

The class from noon to 2:30 p.m. is part of a series of Saturday classes held at BLT, 223 Saratoga Road. Cost is $65. Call 683-7440.

Author holds cooking demo

Rebecca Woodland, author of "The Blonde Vegetarian," hosts a free cooking demonstration at 3 p.m. Sept. 18.

Woodland has been a wellness cuisine instructor at Castle Medical Center’s Wellness Center since 2003, and her book was published by Island Heritage earlier this year.

The demonstration will take place at Kokua Market, 2643 S. King St.

Make the most of ‘5-star’ foods

What do quinoa, kale, broccoli, soybeans and sweet potatoes have in common? These "five-star" foods are big on nutrients and flavor, and chef Paul Onishi will teach how to get the most out of them in the next Wellness Cuisine class at Castle Medical Center.

The vegetarian cooking class runs 6:30 p.m. Sept. 23 in the center’s auditorium. Cost is $15, $20 per couple, and $10 seniors and students. Payment is required two days in advance. Call 263-5400 or visit www.castlemed.org.

Festival features music and wine

The inaugural 2010 Westin Princeville Jazz and Wine Festival will take place Sept. 25 on the main lawn of the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas.

Fifteen wines will complement the culinary creations of Nanea Restaurant, St. Regis Princeville, Sheraton Kauai Resort and 22 North.

Music will be provided by taiko drum master Kenny Endo, the Michael Ruff Trio, and pianist Tennyson Stephens and friends.
