MADD’s gala affair touts safe drinking
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is known for its no-nonsense attitude on alcohol, but it’s breaking that mold for its first Hawaii fundraising gala.
The 1920s-themed event, scheduled for Oct. 9, will offer music, dinner, dancing, a silent auction, and … alcohol.
There will be a price for all that levity. Tickets are $250 per person, which includes the taxi partygoers are required to take to and from the affair, which is at a secret location.
Taxi drivers will know the venue but will take passengers there only if told a password, said Caroline Witherspoon, a spokeswoman for MADD.
"It’s actually the first time that MADD nationally is allowing one of its chapters to have alcohol at one of its events, and the only way they would do that is if we could guarantee that everyone who got there would do so safely," she said.
Groups planning to attend should not even plan to gather at a single home before heading out to the gala, she said, since the organization does not want people leaving their cars there and then driving home afterward.

The theme is a "MADD Cab Affair," recalling the speak-easy era. Partygoers are encouraged to dress in period costume or in cocktail attire, Witherspoon said. Premium tables of 10 will be available at $2,500 to $10,000.
Cab fare for each guest is included in the table or individual pricing. Visit maddhawaii.com or e-mail maddcab@maddhawaii.com.
