Sea Warriors perfect in Hilo

The Hawaii Pacific University women’s volleyball team won two matches on the final day of the Vulcan Classic in Hilo yesterday.

The Sea Warriors defeated St. Martin’s University, 21-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-16, and then downed Western New Mexico in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 to run their record to 4-0.

Courtney Curran and Brittney Wood led a balanced HPU attack in the first match, with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Kelly Balanay led the Sea Warriors with 11 kills in the second match.

» Host UH-Hilo was swept in straight sets by Ashland University yesterday.

The Eagles (3-1) prevailed, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.

Kawena Cubi-Otineru had 10 kills and Hillary Hurley nine to lead UH-Hilo (2-1). Rachel Thornquist hit for .545, notching seven kills on 11 attempts.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii opened the season with a 1-3 record at the Seawolf Spike, held Friday and yesterday in Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Seasiders dropped their first match on Friday to Chico State 23-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-21 and also lost the nightcap to host Sonoma State 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 27-25.

The Seasiders rallied with San Francisco State yesterday, but suffered a narrow defeat in five sets, 25-23, 25-27, 24-26, 25-21, 15-13. The team continued to improve throughout the tournament, winning its final match of the event against Cal State Stanislaus 25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 25-22. Julia Becker slammed a team-high 14 kills and hit .325 in the win.

» Chaminade dropped a straight-set match to Regis to finish the Oredigger Volleyball Classic at Golden, Colo., yesterday.

The Rangers (2-2) downed the Silverswords, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18.

Pisila Tukia had seven kills and junior setter Tanya Alvino had 20 assists for Chaminade (1-3). Kristy Inamasu had 18 digs.

Hawaii-Hilo, Cal State East Bay tie

The Hawaii-Hilo women’s soccer team battled with Cal State East Bay and the heat at Waipio Soccer Complex, only to draw 1-1 in double overtime yesterday.

The Vulcans (1-0-1) took an early lead with a goal by Shanell Ramirez in the sixth minute, however the Pioneers (0-1-1) tied the game on a second-half corner kick.

Seasiders dominate Nazarene 4-1

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s soccer team claimed its first victory of the season, defeating Northwest Nazarene 4-1 in a nonconference match.

Senior forward Eric Lowe scored his first goal of the season in the fifth minute of the game, but the Crusaders countered with a goal one minute later by John DiLulo. BYUH answered back with a long goal by William Barber that bounced off the goalie in the seventh minute. Aaron Drewery and Jerel Alvares also scored for the Seasiders.
