Hannemann wants special court for veterans convicted for crimes
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mufi Hannemann is proposing to create a specialized court that would provide treatment and other services to veterans convicted of criminal activity.
The former Honolulu mayor announced that and other proposals during a speech to veterans today.
In a vet court, which would be modeled after Hawaii’s drug courts, a Veterans Administration official would sit in on sentencing of veterans convicted of crimes.
The official would tell the judge which services could be added to the vet’s sentencing order. Also, a mentor would be assigned to help the vet complete those services.
Hannemann also proposed construction of a memorial to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
