With Farrington nursing a slim lead and backed deep in its territory, a small but vocal group of boosters started a chant that neatly summed up the Governors’ late-game emphasis.

"Let’s go, O-line, let’s go."

Farrington’s front answered by powering the sixth-ranked Governors to a clinching score in a 21-12 victory over No. 3 Kamehameha last night at Kaiser Stadium.

The "Battle of Kalihi" relocated to Hawaii Kai this year and Farrington (3-0) claimed bragging rights by shutting out the reigning Division I state champion Warriors (2-1) in the second half and leaning on its line to power the offense.

Running back Scotland Smith burst through openings to pick up 140 yards on 23 carries and the Governors rushed for 223 yards as a team.

"Our offensive line was great. We just kept telling them to keep doing your job, sustain your blocks and keep doing what your doing," Smith said.

Farrington quarterback Jared Hakuole completed just three of seven passes, but two went for touchdowns, including a 29-yard strike to Ryan Reyes for the go-ahead score late in the third quarter.

Kamehameha, which carried a 12-7 lead into the second half, threatened to reclaim the lead midway through the fourth quarter by driving to the Farrington 15. But the drive stalled, and the Warriors gave the ball back to the Governors when a fourth-down pass sailed out of the end zone with 8:42 left in the game.

The Farrington offense then snuffed the Warriors’ hopes of a comeback, driving 85 yards in 12 plays — all of them runs behind a line of sophomores Charles Sataraka and Mitchell and Michael Boyd, junior Gapelu Sila, senior Brysen Fanene and senior tight end Dimitri Iosefo.

"We have three sophomores starting, so those young guys are learning and getting better, and we’re real happy with their progress," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.

By the time Smith scored on a 5-yard run, the Govs had taken 5 minutes, 29 seconds off the clock and sealed a momentum-boosting win heading into next week’s OIA Red East game against Castle.

"They were controlling the line, so that was a big plus for them," Kamehameha coach David Stant said. "If they ran a dive or iso or power, it was 5-6 yards a pop and the running backs did a great job of making guys miss."

Although the Hawaii Kai winds contributed to the Governors relying heavily on the running game in the second half, Hakuole twice gave Farrington the lead through the air.

Farrington jumped ahead on its first possession of the game when Toma Barrett ran down Hakuole’s toss down the right sideline for a 28-yard touchdown.

Kamehameha struggled to move the ball until the first quarter expired. Facing third and 6 at the Warriors’ 43 to open the second period, Christian Akana hit Keanu Haina on a deep post for a 57-yard touchdown.

After the Warriors recovered a fumble at the Governors’ 28, Akana converted another third and long to set up the go-ahead score. A 31-yard strike to Brock Ruelke on third and 14 gave Kamehameha possession at the 1 and Akana scored on a quarterback sneak. The Warriors misfired on their second PAT and took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

The Warriors’ first possession of the second half ended with a missed field goal and the Governors responded with a seven-play drive capped by Hakuole’s second touchdown pass of the night. Farrington then put the game away late to send Kamehameha into its Interscholastic League of Honolulu season looking for answers.

"Hopefully this is a wakeup call for us," Stant said. "We’ve got Saint Louis next week, so it’s going to be a tough game. That’s two physical games back-to-back, and hopefully we’re in shape enough to compete with them next week."
