Red Bull Rivals contest set Sept. 4

High-profile surfers of the North Shore and the South Shore will compete for bragging rights in the Red Bull Rivals event on Sept. 4 at Sandy Beach.

Ten surfers will face off head-to-head between the teams from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Sandys, which is considered neutral ground. Coco Ho and Carissa Moore are the respective North and South team captains.

Fans can vote in the competitors by texting "rbrivals" to 72855 and following further instructions.

Ching eliminated

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. » Punahou graduate Alex Ching was eliminated yesterday at the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay.

Morgan Hoffmann beat Ching 4 and 2 in the third round.

Earlier in the day, Ching won his second-round match over Patrick Rodgers, 3 and 1.

Defending champ Byeong-Hun An advanced to the quarterfinals with two easy wins.

Geoghegan, Beckmann top triathletes

Strong finishes in the run segment led Marc Geoghegan and Rachel Beckmann to victory in the Jamba Juice XTERRA MoutainMan Triathlon on Saturday at Kualoa Ranch.

Geoghegan was the first overall finisher in 1 hour, 26 minutes, 31 seconds. Beckmann was the first female finisher (1:39:52).

The course included a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer mountain bike and a 6-kilometer trail run. Some 150 athletes competed.

Honolulu’s Chad Seymour was second, 33 seconds behind Geoghegan (1:27:04), and Douglas Perry of Kailua was third (1:28:39).

Waialua’s Laurel Dudley, who led after the first two legs, was the second female (1:40:20) and Patricia Havey of Honolulu third (1:42:35).

The top finishers in the various age groups — 66 total — qualified for the XTERRA World Championship off-road triathlon, Oct. 24 on Maui.

Shorebreak event tomorrow in Kailua

The sixth Shorebreak Classic, a youth surf meet sponsored by the Peter Miller Foundation, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kalama Beach Club in Kailua.

The competition is free with age-group divisions from 9 and under to 18 and under. Lunch and ice cream will be provided.
