Hawaii Community Correctional Center escapee is charged
Big Island police yesterday arrested and charged a 39-year-old man who escaped from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center’s minimum security facility on Aug. 17.
Nathan Keali’i Apolo was charged with second-degree escape. Bail was set at $10,000, and Apolo was transferred back to the custody of the Department of Public Safety.
Apolo had completed a furlough program when he walked away from the Hale Nani minimum-security facility.
Deputy sheriffs, working on a tip, staked out the grounds surrounding the Hilo courthouse this morning and arrested Apolo without incident at 8:50 while he sat in his car.
