Waipio to play Ohio

HONOLULU » Waipio will face Hamilton, Ohio, at 10 a.m. Hawaii time at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., today.

Hamilton lost 6-0 yesterday to Columbus, Ga., which defeated Waipio 6-2 on Saturday.

Waipio is coming off Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Toms River, N.J.

Ching advances at U.S. Amateur

Punahou graduate Alex Ching shot a 73 for the second straight day yesterday and qualified for the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur at the Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Ching’s 3-over 146 total was 10 strokes behind medalist Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, Calif., who followed his 62 on Monday on the Home Course with a 74 yesterday at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash.

Ching tied for 33rd and will play his first match in the 64-man field today.

Two other Hawaii golfers, Kalena Preus (77–163) of Honolulu and Rudy Cabalar Jr. (83–167) of Ewa Beach, failed to qualify for match play.

4 from UH are ITA scholars

Four University of Hawaii men’s tennis players were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association scholar-athletes for the 2009-10 season.

Philipp Eberhard, Craig Faulk, Dmytro Kovalyov and Andreas Weber were honored for their performances on the court and in the classroom. UH was also recognized as an ITA all-academic team. That recognition goes to programs with a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.2 or above.

To earn ITA scholar-athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the academic year and been enrolled at least two semesters.

Eberhard, Faulk and Kovalyov were honored for the first time. It was the third such honor for Weber, the team’s lone senior last season. The native of Germany graduated with a degree in business in May after helping lead the team to its third straight WAC championship and NCAA tournament appearance. Weber ended his career by earning All-WAC and All-WAC academic mentions all four seasons.

Dolan brothers place seventh

Kailua brothers Patrick and Ryan Dolan took seventh in their Final C kayak race at the ICF Sprint World Championships on Sunday in Poland.

Competing in the K-2 200 meters, the Dolans finished fourth in their heat with a time of 33.837 seconds. Then they took fifth in the semifinal, in 34.024, to qualify for Final C, where they finished in 34.503.

The Dolans also took fourth in the 200 relay, with Morgan House and Tim Hornsby. All four are training in Hawaii with the USA men’s kayak team.

The men will join Hawaii Canoe and Kayak team members at the USA Canoe/Kayak Spring National Championships, starting tomorrow at Oklahoma City.
