Note to potential beer thieves: After having allegedly stolen a case of beer, it’s rarely a good idea to then throw a rock through the window of a nearby Honolulu Police Department patrol car — especially when an officer is still inside.

That’s how a 17-year-old boy ended up in police custody on suspicion of first-degree robbery and first-degree criminal property damage.

An HPD officer was stopped at the intersection of North School Street and Kamehameha IV Road at 11:40 p.m. Saturday night, unaware that a beer robbery had just occurred at a nearby Kalihi store, police said.

The officer saw a 17-year-old boy walking down the road carrying a case of beer under his arm when the boy suddenly yelled at the officer, then threw a rock that shattered the driver’s-side window of the patrol car, police said.

The shattered glass caused “substantial injury” to both of the officer’s forearms, according to police.

Both the boy and a male with him ran away, but officers arrested the boy carrying the beer.

Witnesses at a nearby store then identified the boy as the person who had just allegedly stolen some beer, police said.
