Proceeds from the Hawaii premiere of Dana Brown’s latest film, "Highwater," will benefit the Surfrider Foundation’s Hawaii Chapters and their programs to protect isle coastlines. The documentary on the Pipeline Masters and Triple Crown competitions on the North Shore screens at 8 p.m. Thursday at Ward Stadium 16.

New report details risks at Pohakuloa

The military plans to unveil a report Aug. 31 detailing the risks associated with depleted uranium at the Pohakuloa Training Area, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported yesterday.

The "Baseline Human Health Risk Assessment" is a step in the Army’s process of obtaining an after-the-fact license to possess and handle the radioactive material that was used in weapons training during the 1960s.

The presentation of the report to the media, community groups and various county officials will be held at Pohakuloa, spurring plans by peace activists to hold a protest that day at the gate on Saddle Road.

Jim Albertini of the Malu Aina Center for Nonviolent Education and Action said the Army should hold presentations at more accessible areas. He also said the military should balance the presentation with community representatives, the newspaper said.

"We appeal to you to come out of your bunker, your ‘Green Zone’ on Hawaii island, and meet and treat the people of this island with respect," Albertini said.
