Hyatt hotel protesters fined $100
Twenty-four people who were arrested during a union protest that halted traffic in Waikiki last month entered guilty pleas yesterday in District Court.
Each paid a $100 fine but was granted deferred acceptance of their pleas, which means the charge will be erased from their records if they do not again run afoul of the law.
The two dozen members and supporters of Unite Here Local 5 pleaded guilty to civil disobedience, classified as a noncriminal violation.
They were among 100 people who were arrested July 22 after participating in a sit-down protest in front of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa. The protest disrupted traffic on Kalakaua Avenue for about an hour. Others who were arrested have yet to appear in District Court.
The demonstration was held in response to the lack of negotiations over a new contract for unionized workers at the Hyatt Regency.
Management and union members have since agreed to meet Tuesday and Wednesday.
