Isle couple in finals for makeover contest
Breaking up is hard to do, as Neal Sedaka says in his ’60s hit song, but Vaugn Tokunaga thought it was time for her parents to let go — of their bedroom furniture, that is, a set that’s almost as old as that tune. So the Mililani resident entered Cary and Charlotte Tokunaga in CSN Stores’ "Big Bad Bedroom Breakup" contest.
To a surprised and somewhat chagrined Charlotte Tokunaga, even the judges at CSN Stores agreed with her daughter, and the couple made the cut of 87 among 6,200 who vied for the prize of a $10,000 bedroom makeover.
The winner will be picked from the top five finalists who receive the most votes on the CSN Stores Facebook page at www.hsblinks.com/2l6. The voting deadline is Sept. 10. CSN Stores Room Rescue Crew and designer Michael Payne will pick the winner, to be announced Sept. 30.
"When I found out, I was a bit apprehensive. I didn’t even know what it was really all about," said Tokunaga. "And I didn’t have an inclination it would even ever go this far."
Her current motif might be described as ’70s chic walnut and avocado green.
She has been hunting for furniture for some time, but so far hasn’t found anything she liked enough to replace her current ensemble.

"We’re not desperate," she said, "But Vaugn said, ‘I’m going to just try to enter for you, you need a new dresser. Look, all your drawers are stuck!’"
Part of her daughter’s plea reads, "My mother has looked for new furniture in the past, but was never able to find what she wanted here in Hawaii. We tried to find something they would like on the mainland, but shipping was an obstacle. They’ve since given up and decided that they can continue to live with what they have. I would love for them to have a new bedroom they can enjoy every night. I envision them in a space that’s light, comfortable, and relaxing. They absolutely deserve it!" CSN Stores, a furniture and home decor company, boasts 200-plus stores, but none in Hawaii. Vaugn Tokunaga, who’s busy saving lives in the emergency room at Pali Momi Hospital when she’s not trying to rescue her parents from the ’70s, discovered the contest as she was placing an order on the CSN website.
"If we do win that would be nice," her mother said.
