New quarterbacks power ‘Iolani past Waialua
No Jarrett Arakawa, no problem for ‘Iolani and its next-generation quarterbacks.
‘Iolani’s dual sophomore signal-callers, Josiah Situmeang and Reece Foy, took turns punishing Waialua last night en route to a 37-7 romp in the main event of the 47th annual Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium.
The three-time defending Division II state champions went up 23-0 by halftime and never allowed the Bulldogs to entertain thoughts of a season-opening upset in the rare meeting between the schools.
Now, ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look has a tough decision to make. Who takes over full-time for Arakawa, the departed, talented QB who led the Raiders to their last two titles?
The 6-foot Situmeang got the start and went 7-for-17 for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Foy (5-10) was an efficient 8-for-11 with 75 yards as ‘Iolani won its seventh straight season opener.

"At least we got some options," ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "Their part, we weren’t looking so much at stats and points and all that. We’re looking at what it takes to become a quarterback. Be a quarterback. You’re looking at their presence on the field, their poise. … I thought both of them did a great job of it."
So, as for actually naming a guy …
"That’s a tough question," Look said. "They’ve been running neck and neck all summer. I don’t know."
Up next for the Raiders: a much tougher test in Mililani and quarterback Trent McKinney.
A bad Waialua snap on special teams allowed ‘Iolani to get off to a good start. Jaren Nakamura downed the Bulldogs punter for a safety … and the Raiders’ offense took the reins from there.
Situmeang hit leaping receiver Josiah Sukumaran for his first touchdown, a 26-yarder in the first quarter. The two connected again in the second half, this time a 12-yarder, to go up 30-0.
"I’m just thankful for the opportunity to play," said Situmeang, who quarterbacked the ‘Iolani intermediate team last year. "Being at ‘Iolani from kindergarten, you watch all the games and it’s just amazing to be out here for Father Bray. We would go to all the games and watch (Jarrett), and he’s such a great quarterback."
The Raiders didn’t appear to miss much in this early contest. Midway through the third quarter, they forced a running clock at 37-0 on a 35-yard scoring jaunt by Ammon Baldomero, his second TD of the game.
The Bulldogs, behind senior quarterback William Sacapulo-Uepa, were limited to short passing situations and never could establish their running game (minus-29 yards on the ground). As a consequence, the Raiders enjoyed favorable field position throughout.
Waialua assistant George Hatchie coached in the stead of head coach Lincoln Barit, who was away on a trip.
‘Iolani lost its shutout in the fourth quarter on a bad snap that got past Foy. Waialua defensive lineman Nati Fuatiga alertly fell on the ball in an end-zone scrum to put the Bulldogs on the board.

PAC-FIVE 7, KAISER 3
Wolfpack quarterback Jack Foster hit Everett Kim with a lob pass to the back right corner of the end zone with 3:57 to play for a 7-3 come-from-behind win over the Cougars in the first game of the 47th Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium.
Pass-happy Pac-Five, in the first game of the post-P.J. Minaya era, overcame offensive frustration for most of the afternoon to extend its winning streak in season openers to eight.
Pac-Five senior safety Kelly Meguro collected three of the Pack’s five interceptions, and teammate Casey Ebato picked off Kaipo Oemalda-Scholtz as time expired.
"We had trouble with protection just because they gave us a look we hadn’t seen before," Wolfpack coach Kip Botelho said. "We battled. Our defense is our strength … we put it in their hands. It was a good test for us to see where we’re at. We got a lot of work to do."
A 33-yard field goal by Kaiser’s Kamaka Diaz at the end of the first half looked to be the difference for most of the game. But it wasn’t enough to make new coach Will Lobendahn a winner in his Cougars debut.
