Political Candidacies: Three declare for city posts
Three men declared themselves candidates for municipal posts today.
City-County Clerk Ernest N. Heen, Democrat, said he will run for reelection. Alexander K. Kahalepuna, Republican, said he will be a candidate for city-county clerk. Sheriff Duke P. Kahanamoku, Democrat, also announced his candidacy for re-election.
… Mr. Heen, clerk since January 2, 1933, is seeking his fourth term. He has made many reforms and installed time and money saving devices such as filing systems for indexing of thousands of names of voters, and the filing of supervisorial resolutions and documents. He points with pride to that fact that he has saved thousands of dollars in the operating cost of his department.
… Sheriff Kahanamoku is campaigning for his third term. He says he will fight for either a new city-county jail or transfer of Oahu prison to the city-county if a new territorial penitentiary is to be built.
He advocates compulsory swimming courses in all of the public schools of Hawaii, including high schools. He says swimming is compulsory in Australian schools, and this policy is producing swimmers of championship caliber there.
Sheriff Kahanamoku reorganized the city jail personnel several years ago. Last year he improved the service in the weights and measures division.
