MANKATO, Minn. » Brett Favre’s decision should be near.

The quarterback traveled to Pensacola, Fla., yesterday to have his left ankle examined by Dr. James Andrews, according to NFL sources. The NFL Network reported that Favre was aboard a private plane owned by his agent, Bus Cook. Andrews has an office in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

What Andrews told Favre will be key because the future Hall of Famer has said the ankle has not responded as he had hoped it would after surgery was performed by Andrews in late May.

Favre now will have to decide if he can play a 20th NFL season. The Vikings likely are hoping to get a decision by the middle of the month.

Browns’ LB won’t need surgery

A person familiar with D’Qwell Jackson’s injury says the Browns linebacker has been told he does not need surgery and could be back on the field in less than one month.

Jackson strained his right pectoral muscle in practice this week. He got a second opinion yesterday from his surgeon in New York, who came to the same conclusion as the team’s medical staff and prescribed rest and rehab, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jackson could play in the Sept. 12 opener at Tampa Bay.

Revis and Jets agree to keep talks private

The Hatfields and McCoys have called off their public feud. For now.

With their public spat over a proposed new contract for Darrelle Revis creating a black cloud over an already difficult situation, the Jets and Revis’ agents have agreed to keep their negotiations private.

Revis is adamant about becoming the highest-paid cornerback and his holdout has reached its 12th day. He wants a contract that averages more per season than the $15.1 million Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha collects.
