Man dies after Leeward ocean rescue

A 50-year-old man plucked from the ocean along the Leeward Coast of Oahu died yesterday after apparently going into cardiac arrest, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s Emergency Services Department.

Police said the man was taking part in an "ocean activity" coordinated by a local tour operator and was attempting to swim back to the tour boat when he began struggling.

He was pulled from the water and onto the vessel sometime after 11 a.m. and may have gone into cardiac arrest on the vessel, Cheplic said.

People onboard performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until they tied up at Ko Olina Yacht Harbor. Paramedics treated the man and took him to a hospital in critical condition, Cheplic said. He was later pronounced dead.

The driver and a passenger fled the scene on foot. Police caught the passenger, a 21-year-old woman, and arrested her on suspicion of second-degree unlawful entry into a motorized vehicle.

Police do not have a description of the driver.
