Look like a fish, swim like a fish

What better way to have young children swimming like fishes than to have them looking like sea creatures? Such is the idea behind "Sea Squirts" swim assist vests created by Opa Cove.

Choices include clownfish, great white shark (pictured), pink dolphin, blue dolphin, killa whale and angelfish. Among the features are flotation panels that can be removed to adjust buoyancy—much like training wheels on a bike.

The company also makes life jackets in the same designs as the vests.

North Shore swim caps series

The 2010 Surf ‘n’ Sea Swim Series ends tomorrow with the North Shore Challenge Swim. The 2.3-mile open-ocean swim starts at 9 a.m. and goes from Ehukai Beach to Waimea Bay.

Late entry fee is $35. For more information, call 372-8885 or 554-8959, or go to hawaiiswim.com.

The series is in its 22nd year. This is the fourth swim of the series. Many use the swims to prepare for the Waikiki Roughwater Swim on Labor Day.

The race is patrolled by certified lifeguards, and refreshments will be available prior to the awards ceremony.

Free lacrosse clinic for girls

A free lacrosse clinic will be held Sunday for girls interested in trying the sport or improving their skills.

The event will start at 11:30 a.m. at Kapiolani Park, following a 10:30 a.m. exhibition game between the elite team and a local club team composed of women who were college lacrosse players.

The clinic is being offered by a select group of elite mainland lacrosse players and college coaches. The players are here for a lacrosse camp and the coaches are from Division I university teams such as Duke and Maryland.

The players range in age from 7 to 18. Lacrosse sticks and goggles will be available for anyone wanting to participate.

For information, contact Kingsley Wong at 721-6099 or Joni Wong at 478-8083.

Surfing award show coming here

SURFER Magazine’s Surfer Poll, the presentation of the sport’s top awards, will be held in Hawaii after 39 years on the mainland.

The event, which is limited to invited guests, will be held at Turtle Bay Resort on Dec. 6, in conjunction with the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

"We’re really excited to be bringing SURFER Poll to the mecca of surfing during the most exciting month on the surf world’s calendar," SURFER Publisher Tony Perez said in a release. "We owe a lot of thanks to the incredible North Shore community, Verizon Wireless and Samsung, and to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing for allowing us the opportunity to further enhance the prestige of SURFER Poll."

Surfer Poll will crown the top 10 male and top 5 female surfers as voted on by SURFER’s readers. Online voting for 2010 begins this month.
