Irons done in South Africa

Hawaii’s Andy Irons was knocked out in the fourth round yesterday at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay surf event in South Africa.

Sean Holmes edged Irons 15.60 to 15.17, completing an improbable double for the South African, who knocked off nine-time world champion Kelly Slater in the morning’s third round by four hundredths of a point.

Irons defeated Australian Luke Stedman in Round 3 earlier in the day.

Hawaii’s Dusty Payne advanced out of Round 3 by defeating Chris Davidson of Australia, 15.33-10.20, but never got to surf his fourth-rounder against Australian Adam Melling.

Hawaii surfers Kekoa Bacalso and Fred Patacchia also lost in Round 3.

Slater’s loss, coupled with two heat wins by South African Jordy Smith, moved Smith past Slater into first place in the race for the Association of Surfing Professionals world title.
