Kaufman wins at Florida meet

Amber Kaufman’s hot streak in the high jump continued Saturday when she won the gold medal at the 2010 NACAC (North American, Central American, Caribbean) Under-23 Track and Field Championships at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida.

The University of Hawaii senior cleared 6 feet, 1.25 inches to beat U.S. teammate April Sinkler, a junior at Clemson. Sinkler cleared five heights on her first attempt, but failed on three tries at 6-1.25. Kaufman cleared it on her second attempt.

Kaufman won the NCAA Outdoor high jump title last month and was second at the NCAA Indoors. She is also a volleyball All-American, helping the Rainbow Wahine to the final four in December.

Earlier this month, Kaufman earned the Joe Kearney Award as the Western Athletic Conference’s top female student-athlete. She has another season of track eligibility remaining.

Team USA earned a record 74 medals at the championships. Athletes from 32 member nations competed.

Kaufman has the fourth-best high jump mark in the country this season, clearing 6-3.25 at the Stanford Invitational in March. She is also a four-time academic All-WAC honoree.

Calip shoots 76 at Public Links

Pahoa’s Nainoa Calip shot a 5-over 76 yesterday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links yesterday at Bryan Golf Park in Greensboro, N.C.

Calip is tied for 91st and trails the leader, Derek Ernst of UNLV, by 11 shots.

The field of 156 players will be cut to 64 after today’s second round. Match play begins tomorrow.

Three other Hawaii golfers are in the field. Hilo’s Chris Igawa and Haiku’s Justin Keiley shot 78s, and Waipahu’s David Saka carded an 82.

Lui in lead at Waialae tournament

Terry Lui shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday to take the lead after the first round of the 54th annual Waialae Women’s Invitational. Mia Hew and Caryn Morita share second, one shot back.

Morita and Shelly Uwaine, who plays in B flight, shot the lowest net scores with 67s.

The final round will be played today at Waialae Country Club.

Rainbows baseball camps to start

The University of Hawaii’s summer baseball camps get under way Saturday with pitching and hitting camps at Les Murakami Stadium.

Two- and four-day camps are available for kids ages 7-18. The cost is $100 for the two-day camp and $375 for the lone four-day camp that takes place July 19-22.

The clinics will be run by Rainbows head coach Mike Trapasso and the coaching staff.
