Leahi wins silver at regionals

Leahi ’97 Premier captured a silver medal in the Under-13 girls division at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals last month in Albuquerque, N.M.

Leahi, one of 17 Hawaii teams in various divisions to qualify for the regionals, won its four-team pool in the tournament held June 21-27. After edging teams from Washington and Northern California 1-0 in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Leahi tied San Diego Surf White 1-1 in the final, but lost 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Members of the team were CJ Fajardo, Pikake Kaneshiro, Kiani Halushka, Casey Thompson, Nycole Mitsuyasu, Mikiala Ramos-Kamaka, Kayla Mizo, Bianca Gonzalez, PuaLehua Keola, Sarah Lau, Samantha Nishiyama, Tara Tesoro, Noe Kong-Johnson, Kameryn Jury-Hale, Hiilani Thomas, Kawai Makue, Emma Young and Shauny Yamura.

The HSC Bulls (U13 boys) reached the semifinals in its division. Blitz FC (U12 girls) and Leahi Premier (U14 girls) made the quarterfinals.

Hawaii boxing team set for nationals

Hawaii will be represented by an 11-member delegation at the USA Boxing National Championships, July 12-17 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Competing with the Hawaii regional team are Keola McKee (108 pounds, Wailuku B.C.), Anthony Ibanez (123, Wailuku B.C.), Danson Rellez (132, Yeshua B.C.), Anthony Parker (141, Pearlside), Gaylord Balasi (152, Kawano B.C.), Antone Pereira (165, Waianae B.C.), Jesse Jones (178, Pearlside B.C.) and Noa Suiaunoa (201, Waianae B.C.). Competing in the female divisions are Corina Ishikawa (106, Kawano B.C.), Gardenia Sims (165, Kawano B.C) and Fallon Farrar (178, Kawano B.C.)

The top four finishers in each of the male divisions qualify for the U.S. national team. The female division champions will advance to the AIBA World Championships in September.

Hawaii judo teams win gold

Teams representing the 50th State Judo Association claimed the boys and girls titles at the first USJF/USJI Junior National Championships held last Friday to Sunday in California.

Teshiya and Teniya Alo both won national titles to lead the Hawaii girls to the team championship along with Zoe Tateyama, Taylor Castro and Brandy Lopez.

Members of the boys team were Noah Wusstig, Andre Pagurayan, Jonah Hoshino, Kainoa Marumoto and Matt Tsubota. The teams were coached by Chris and Vince Sokugawa.

Mililani wins PONY championship

The Mililani PONY 14-year-old baseball team defeated Maui 14-3 on Wednesday to win the state championship.

The team advances to the West Zone regional in Whittier, Calif., starting July 29.

Ka Ulukoa takes gold

Ka Ulukoa Volleyball Club defeated two teams from Puerto Rico to capture the gold medal in the 14 Open division of the USAV Boys’ Junior National Championships yesterday in Austin, Texas.

Ka Ulukoa (11-0) swept Borinquen Coqui 25-8, 25-17 in the semifinal, then San Juan 25-22, 25-17 in the final to finish undefeated. The team only dropped one set in 11 matches, that coming against Puerto Rico’s Halcones on Wednesday.

Members of the winning team are Austin Amian, Skylan Engleman, Evan Enriques, Adrian Faitalia, Noah Hayashida, Kaehu Kaaa, Micah Ma’a, Keenan Meyer and Larry Tuileta. The coaches are Pona Ma’a and Charlie Jenkins. (There is no all-tournament team selected at this age-group level).

Ku’ikahi Volleyball Club (5-7) placed seventh, losing to HLVBC in the silver bracket semifinal.

The event concludes today. Still competing from Hawaii is Ka Ulukoa in the 17 Club division.
