The ban on drivers using hand-held cell phones is now a statewide law.

Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares signed a bill yesterday outlawing driving while using mobile electronic devices.

Maui County was the last county in Hawaii to pass an ordinance banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.

The ban is in effect in other Hawaii counties, including Honolulu.

The ordinance carries a first-time fine of $100 and includes an exception for drivers with commercial licenses and operators of registered fleet vehicles using two-way radios on the job, and with a hands-free instrument such as a headset.
