Chiarella, Isagawa headline golf winners

Alex Chiarella won the boys’ 15-18 title and Cassy Isagawa the girls’ 15-18 championship as the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s State Junior Championships concluded yesterday at The Club at Hokulia on the Big Island.

Chiarella, from Makawao, carded a 6-under 138 for a three-stroke victory over Honolulu’s Ron Saito and Ryan Kuroiwa. Isagawa, of Wailuku, finished at 140, 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Kacie Komoto from Honolulu.

The 13-14 titles went to Honolulu golfers Allisen Corpuz (153) and Richard Hattori (152).

Also yesterday, Chiarella, Kuroiwa, Michael Fan and Justin Chu were named to the Boys Junior America’s Cup team while Isagawa, Komoto, Cyd Okino and Alina Ching were selected for the Girls Junior America’s Cup team.

Chosen for the Eddie Hogan Cup were Aaron Kunitomo, Justin Keiley, Lorens Chan and Scotty Yamashita. Alice Kim, Eimi Koga, Ciera Min and Marissa Chow were selected to the Mary Cave Cup.

Kim, from Honolulu, and Kahului’s Aaron Kunitomo also qualified for the Trusted Choice Big "I" national tournament, July 27-30, at Old York Country Club in Chesterfield, N.J.

Suiter an Area Code selection

Punahou School outfielder Michael Suiter has been selected to play for the Cincinnati Reds in next month’s Area Code Baseball Tournament.

Suiter, an incoming senior, is the first Hawaii player to be chosen for the all-star tournament in nearly 10 years, and the first from Punahou. The seven-team tourney will be held Aug. 5-10 in Long Beach, Calif.

Shockers earn Cal Ripken berth

A bases-loaded walk to Koa Matsumoto brought in Aaron Ines with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Mililani Shockers a 9-8 win over the Makakilo-Ewa Bombers in the championship game of the Cal Ripken Baseball 10-under state tournament at Central Oahu Regional Park on Sunday.

The team advances to the regional tournament in Elk Grove, Calif., beginning July 26.

Other team members are Ryne Aniya and Tarah Aniya, Jarron Carter, Zach Gushiken, Trevor Ichimura, Andrew Ines, Taylor Inouye, Shaydon Kubo, Davis Mau, Ryne Oshiro, Aiden Romero, Shea Yamaguchi. The team manager is Jon Aniya and coaches are Myles Gushiken and Gary Ichimura.

Jammers third in junior volleyball

Jammers Volleyball Club from Honolulu finished third in the 16 national division in the 31st USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships that concluded Saturday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev.

Coached by Davin Iwase, members were Malia McGuiness, Taylor Dayton, Haley Robinson, Imani Wimbush, AJ Johnson, Harlee Meyers, Tara Ito, Ashlee Asada, Tayler Higgins, Brittany Kalepa and Tanner Hoke.

Waimea Bay swim Saturday

The Cholo’s Waimea Bay Swim, the second in the three-event of Surf-n-Sea Swim series, begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Waimea Bay.

The 1-mile event is for competitive and recreational swimmers. The late entry is $35.

Pro bodyboarding at Sandy Beach

The U.S. Bodyboarding Associations makes its Hawaii stop this weekend with the Dave & Buster’s Sandy Beach Pro Championships.

Among the top competitors from Hawaii in contention are Trevor Kam, Jacob Romero, Jeff and David Hubbard, JB Hillen and Bud Miyamoto. On the women’s side from Hawaii are Christina DeLima and Jade Robles.

KKEA 1420 hosts sports festival

Free youth clinics and demonstrations will be part of the inauguaral KKEA 1420 Sports Festival July 17 at Kakaako Gateway Park.

HSC Bulls Soccer, Hawaii Football School and Hawaii Speed & Quickness are among the organizations putting on clinics. The event is free and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tinman volunteers still needed

Volunteers are being sought for various duties for the 30th Tinman Triathlon, scheduled for July 25 in Waikiki.
