Wade seeking assistant
The contact period for NCAA men’s volleyball recruiting began yesterday.
For University of Hawaii volleyball coach Charlie Wade, his top priority is landing an assistant coach.
Shelton Tang, who was in charge of video scouting, has decided to resign as an assistant coach. But he will continue to handle the video duties as a volunteer.
"I’m cashing out," mused Tang, who will resume his career as a telecommunications engineer. "Although I’m taking a downgrade in position (as a volleyball coach), I’m getting an upgrade in finances."
As the second assistant, Tang earned a base salary of about $35,000.
"He’ll still be around, and we appreciate that," Wade said.

Wade said the job opening has been posted on the school’s website. The application deadline is July 19.
"We’ll see what kind of interest (the position) draws," Wade said. "We wouldn’t be opposed to redistributing some of the workload to maximize people’s talents, and what kind of skills they bring."
After being named head coach last year, Wade hired Dan Fisher as associate head coach and retained Mason Kuo as assistant coach. Tang, who served as a Rainbow Wahine volunteer coach and video coordinator for 14 years, agreed to join Wade’s staff as an unpaid assistant.
When Kuo resigned to work as an accountant in Hilo, Tang agreed to serve as the assistant coach.
"He kind of bailed us out," Wade said of Tang.
Tang said he will continue to coach Impact Hawaii, a 16-under club. He also will edit videos to help the Warriors prepare for upcoming matches.
