AS THE Internet continues to work its way into every facet of popular culture, the emergence of social media has provided an interesting bit of insight into the way concerts are booked in Honolulu.

When BAMP Project announced the return of Mos Def and Talib Kweli to Honolulu as the reunited Black Star on June 21, hip-hop heads rejoiced. The two had been relatively frequent solo performers here in recent years, but the prospect of seeing both of them on stage at the same time makes their July 22 concert one of the can’t-miss events of the summer.

But shortly after word began to spread on Twitter and Facebook, Kweli posted an update of his own.

"No Black Star show in Hawaii," he wrote in a June 22 update. "Hey promoters … you have to ask me first. And I have to say yes."

While our fine city isn’t without its share of semi-shady "promoters," the guys at BAMP have always been upstanding members of the local concert-throwing community. When reached by phone last week, BAMP’s Matty Hazelgrove described the whole situation as an "unfortunate miscommunication" that used to be handled behind closed doors.

Hazelgrove wouldn’t comment on the record about the reason for the mix-up, but said booking the two rappers as Black Star was a little more challenging than usual since the pair don’t regularly tour together. He did state, however, that the booking agent he was working with sent a text on June 23 stating, "It’s all good," and that tickets still would be available starting last Friday at Pipeline and all Local Motion stores on Oahu.

"It’s happening like it was always planned," said Hazelgrove. "It’s been tricky … (but) we got it all finalized."

Then last Saturday, Kweli himself followed up on Twitter, posting confirmation of the July date and asking, "Where will you be?" Now that his concerns have been addressed, I’m sure plenty of folks will be at Aloha Tower in July to see him and Mos Def …
