Environmental groups are planning a mock oil spill on Waikiki beach to send a message that the United States should move away from its dependence on oil.

The Saturday event organized by the Sierra Club’s Hawaii chapter will use black garbage bags to represent the oil spill. Yellow caution tape will surround the area.

Hawaii Sierra Club President Robert Harris says the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is a wake-up call about the dangers of oil. Harris is calling on President Barack Obama to create a plan to move the United States off of oil within 20 years.

As part of the demonstration, participants will join hands as part of the national Hands Across the Sand event to show a commitment to using more renewable energy and moving away from offshore drilling.
