4 Isle golfers advance at Public Links
SOUTH BEND, Ind. » Hawaii golfers Kimberly Kim and Stephanie Kono slipped in the standings at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, but their stroke-play scores mean little now.
Kim and Kono led a group of four golfers with local ties who advanced into the 64-player match-play bracket, which began today at The Warren Course at Notre Dame.
Kim and Kono both carded rounds of 7-over-par 78 in the second-round of stroke-play qualifying yesterday.

Kim, a former Big Island resident, entered the second round atop the leaderboard after shooting a 66 on Monday and finished as the 13th seed with a two-round total of 2-over 144.
Kono, a Punahou graduate and UCLA junior, began the day in second place and enters the bracket as the 22nd seed, finishing at 145.
Punahou seventh grader Allisen Corpuz shot a 74 yesterday to secure the 37th seed at 5-over 147. Kauai High senior Kelli Oride carded a second straight round of 75 to finish at 8-over 150 and earn the 48th seed.
Kim is back in the bracket a year after finishing second in the event. She carded seven bogeys and a double bogey on the 18th hole to go with two birdies yesterday.
Kono was the stroke-play medalist and reached the round of 16 a year ago. She also struggled in the second round with five bogeys and a double on No. 16.
Corpuz became the youngest player to compete in a USGA championship at 10 years, three months when she played in the 2008 event. She missed the cut then, but will get her chance today when she faces Anna Kim of Canada.
Kristina Merkle, a Moanalua graduate and a sophomore at Tulsa, rebounded from Monday’s 81 with a 74 yesterday, but finished three strokes above the cut line of 10-over 152.
Punahou graduate Anna Jang closed with a round of 85 and missed the cut. Former Maui resident Kyung Kim withdrew after shooting 76 on Monday.
