5 earn spots in national golf events

Three girls from Honolulu and two boys from Maui will be Hawaii’s representatives at the U.S. Junior Girls and U.S. Junior Amateur Championships, respectively, after yesterday’s qualifier at Makaha Resort & Golf Club.

Cyd Okino took medalist honors for the girls, playing the front nine in 2-under-par 34 and finishing with a 1-under 71. She was followed by Punahou teammate Kacie Komoto and ‘Iolani’s Marissa Chow, who both shot 74.

The trio advances to the National Championship at The Country Club of North Carolina, July 19 to 24.

Eimi Koga (75) and Alina Ching (76), also from Honolulu, are the alternates.

Justin Keiley, from Haiku, and Aaron Kunitomo, from Lahaina, advanced in the boys’ 36-hole qualifier. Keiley was the medalist at 68-69-137. Kunitomo (67-140) was three shots back.

They advance to the National Championship at Egypt Valley Golf Club in Michigan, also July 19 to 24.

Lorens Chan (70-143) and Alex Chiarella (72-145) are alternates.

 

Green to head UHH men’s soccer

Bryan Green has been promoted to head coach of the Hawaii-Hilo men’s soccer team.

Green, a Hilo High and Stanford graduate, has been on the Vulcans staff the past two seasons. He played for the Silicon Valley (Calif.) Ambassadors in the United States Professional Developmental League in 1999.

PacWest honor to HPU’s Barry

Hawaii Pacific’s John Barry was named the inaugural Pacific West Conference Sports Information Director of the Year.

Barry, in his third year with HPU, was singled out in particular for his work during the Lady Sea Warriors’ run to the NCAA Division II national softball championship. The ‘Iolani School graduate previously was the Chaminade assistant men’s soccer coach and varsity soccer coach at Saint Louis School.

 

Goalkeeper clinics for boys, girls

Two Bob Barry Goalkeeper Clinics are scheduled next month for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18.

The first session is July 24 and 25 at Damien Memorial School. The second is July 31 and Aug. 1 at Mililani Mauka Community Park.

The cost is $130 per two-day session. Each camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
