McLachlin to play in Reno-Tahoe Open, site of his only PGA win

Honolulu’s Parker McLachlin, who won the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2008 for his only tour victory, has committed to play in the event next month.

Also making early commitments yesterday were Rocco Mediate, Brendon de Jonge and Scott McCarron.

McLachlin, a Punahou School and UCLA alum, will make his third appearance at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Montreux Golf & Country Club on July 15-18.

Mediate has five career wins on tour and finished second to Tiger Woods in a playoff at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. He tied for ninth at Reno last summer.

De Jonge is a native of Zimbabwe who was the first-round leader at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach last week. He has five top-25 finishes so far this season.

Others in the field include Ryan Palmer, who won the 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii.

U.S. Open ratings jump

NBC says its preliminary rating for the final round of the U.S. Open was up 35 percent over last year.

The overnight rating was 6.9 with a 15 share, compared with a 5.1/12 a year ago at Bethpage Black, in which only the third round was completed Sunday because of rain.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned into a program. Shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time. Overnight ratings measure the country’s largest markets.

Miyazato is new No. 1

Women’s golf has a new No. 1 player in Ai Miyazato of Japan.

Miyazato, who has won four LPGA events this year, replaces Jiyai Shin of South Korea, who became No. 1 on May 3 following the retirement of longtime top-ranked player Lorena Ochoa.

Goosen wins 5 skins

Retief Goosen, who recently returned to golf after missing two months with a broken finger, made five birdies to win earn five skins worth $75,000 yesterday while Canadian Mike Weir was shut out the first day of play at the Telus Skins Game at Victoria, British Columbia.
