Fire destroys Wilder Street apartment

An early morning fire today destroyed a second-floor unit at a Wilder Street apartment building.

Nine Honolulu Fire Department units responded to the 2:15 a.m. call to 1190 Wilder Avenue and found the apartment unit and its contents eingulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control by 2:29 a.m. and extinguished just after 3 a.m.

No serious injuries were reported but a resident from a unit above the fire was treated for smoke inhalation after he attempted to awaken a neighbor and extinguish the fire with a garden hose, according to HFD spokesperson Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The fire ignited wooden louvers of the apartment unit above and also caused fire and smoke damage to a neighboring unit. Five of the 16 units in the building were damaged by water used to battle the fire and firefighters remained on the scene for two hours after the fire was extinguished to remove water from affected units, Kealoha said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and damages to the structure and its contents have not yet been estimated.
