The late Jack Lord and "Hawaii Five-0," which ran from 1968 to 1980, made Hawaii a household word for TV viewers, and the show was followed by "Magnum, P.I.," which put Tom Selleck on the map. Tom is still going great guns and is an important cast member of "The Killers" comedy, now playing in theaters. He is really funny as the uptight dad of a gorgeous daughter, played by Katherine Heigl, who gets hooked up with Aston Kutcher’s character. Beautiful people. Pua Paoa McGinness, who started as Tom’s personal assistant 27 years ago, is still going strong as Tom’s right arm. "Both arms," says Pua. "He bats left- and right-handed." Pua was in town from her Big Isle home recently to visit her son, Alika McGuire. Pua says Tom doesn’t have any plans to film in Hawaii at this time, as "Blue Bloods," a series about three generations of New York police officers, will be carried by CBS in the fall. Tom also is busy with his "Jesse Stone" TV movies about a police chief in Massachusetts. He has done six so far, and there is no sign of stopping. Maybe he could track down a crook all the way to Hawaii in a future "Jesse Stone" film. That would be nice …

CBS will air its "Hawaii Five-0" remake in the fall, a very mod version with Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Danno Williams. I knew Jack well enough for him to come to a couple of parties at my residence, and when I first saw clips of the new McGarrett and Danno, unshaven and wearing wrinkled, rugged street attire, the first thing I thought was, "Straight-laced Jack must be turning over in his grave." He always wore a suit and looked sharp, as did other members of his "Five-0" team. Years ago when "Five-0" was on the air, I was in London, and the show’s theme was played during the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. After the ceremony I caught a cab, and when the driver found out I was from Hawaii, he asked whether I knew Jack Lord. When I said yes, he said, "Tell him to get a British tailor." I told Jack the story, and he gave me a wry smile. Jack didn’t care for criticism. Anyway, no matter what the actors wear, the new "Five-0" looks as if it is going to be a fast-paced, explosive, action-packed show. I hope it will be a winner, even if there’s a nude scene. MOVING ON: I called a government agency’s 1-800 number last week and found that I was talking to a woman in Alabama. She was friendly and helpful during our conversation, and we told each other where we were located. She said the only thing she did not like about Hawaii is that the UH women’s softball team beat Alabama, as she and her children were into softball … Soon after that, I ran into Alika Thompson, who started the UH Wahine softball program in 1985 and was the team’s coach. He liked the Alabama story and reminded me that a Wahine team he coached was ranked 17th in the nation in 1987 after beating three nationally ranked teams in a tourney in Las Cruces, N.M. It was the first top-25 ranking for the UH women, although they recorded some impressive victories. One was against the top-ranked defending national champions, UCLA, in the first year of the UH program, Alika said. The Wahine won it 1-0. UCLA went on to win the national title that year …
