Surfers advance at Ala Moana Bowls
Hawaii’s Dustin Cuizon had the highest heat score of the day and one of the two local wildcard entries advanced after yesterday’s competition in the $25,000 Sponsor Me Hawaii pro surfing event at Ala Moana Bowls.
Cuizon, of Ewa Beach, scored at 16.75 out of 20 in winning the last of the Round 1 heats. He added a 16.50 in placing second to Hawaii’s Randall Paulson (16.65) in the second round.
Hilo’s Ian Bowman, a wildcard entry, moved on to the round of 64 after winning his heat. Molokai’s Taoa Pou, 13 and the other wildcard, was fourth in his heat.
Among the other surfers to move on were Kalani Robb, Kai Barger and Derek Ho. Organizers are looking to next week’s expected south swell for the right conditions to conclude the event, part of the ASP Hawaii World Qualifier Series.
HPU’s national champs feted
The Hawaii Pacific softball team, which won its first NCAA Division II national championship last month, will honored at the State Capitol tomorrow.

The presentation will be in the Ceremonial Room at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Sea Warriors (50-8) defeated Valdosta State in the championship of the NCAA Division II World Series with pitcher Sherise Musquiz named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
Sea Warriors sign 4 in volleyball
Three incoming freshmen and a transfer have signed to play volleyball for Hawaii Pacific this season.
Signing with the Lady Sea Warriors are Waiakea’s Chelsey Buyuan, Jamie Asuncio of Sacred Hearts, and Makamae Recca from Kailua. Punahou graduate Pihana Kealoha, a sophomore setter, appeared in 15 matches last season at Pacific.
UH athletes named academic all-WAC
Hawaii had 49 athletes named to the academic all-Western Athletic Conference teams announced yesterday.
Led by NCAA high jump champion Amber Kaufman, 20 UH athletes were on the spring sports all-academic teams, which includes baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf and tennis, and women’s outdoor track and field.
In addition, 29 UH athletes were named to the all-academic team for freshmen and transfers for the 2009-10 school year, led by five selections from the indoor track and field team.
Summer volleyball camps begin
The East Oahu Boys & Girls Volleyball Club will hold summer camps starting today for players ages 10 to 15.
The camps will be held every Wednesday and Friday at different gyms. The Wednesday camps will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity School Gym (5919 Kalanianaole Hwy). Friday camps will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Holy Nativity School (5286 Kalanianaole Hwy).

UH Big Man camp coming up
The Hawaii football program will hold its annual Big Man’s Camp starting Friday on the Manoa campus.
The camp is open to offensive and defensive linemen ages 13-17 and runs through Sunday. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Friday and the sessions run 9-11 a.m. each day.
