Flags lowered to honor sailor

HANCOCK, Mich. » Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm ordered that U.S. flags be lowered statewide yesterday to honor an Upper Peninsula sailor who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

U.S. Navy Fireman 3rd Class Gerald Lehman died just shy of his 18th birthday and was buried as an unknown in Hawaii until DNA recently identified him.

The flag lowering coincided with a funeral Mass in Hancock and burial in Houghton.

DNA samples collected from envelopes of letters Lehman sent home helped identify his remains, which were in a casket with those of five other people.
