Kapapa Island in Kaneohe Bay is now protected by rule as a wildlife sanctuary, the Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.

The department will hold a community stewardship meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Windward Community College’s Hale Akohekohe 105. The meeting will give the community an opportunity to collaborate on planning the management of the islet.

Kapapa Island’s wildlife resources have been protected since 1917 and a wildlife reservation executive order was made in 1932 for the islet. In 1981, Kapapa was removed from the list of protected sanctuaries during a process to revise Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapters 13-152.
