Kids score freebies at summer reading programs at stores, libraries
School’s out for the summer, but local programs are enticing kids to still use their brains. Hawaii public libraries are offering three summer reading programs now through July 2. Participants who read at least one book and make a visit to the library will receive incentives, while supplies last.
"Make a Splash" is designed for infants to sixth-graders and revolves around books about the ocean, fish, protecting the coastline and water sports. Activities and story times will incorporate the theme, though books of any theme will qualify kids for prizes.
For teens in seventh to 12th grade, the "Team Read" has two themes: sports, athletes and fitness, and the suspense and romance of Stephenie Meyer’s "Twilight Saga" vampire novels.
Adults can participate in the "Exercise Your Mind @ your library" program, which includes books on sports, fitness, exercise, dieting, martial arts, yoga, meditation, relaxation, stress management techniques and mind exercises. Visit www.librarieshawaii.org.
Local bookstores also are offering incentives to read. Barnes & Noble is distributing passports to keiki, and once kids read eight books, they receive a free book. Parent and educator activity kits are available at www.barnesandnoble.com.
Borders stores offers a similar program with downloadable forms at media.bordersstores.com/pdf/summerreading.pdf. Once children under 12 read 10 books, they receive a free book.
