Two more players with local ties were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft yesterday.
Hawaii junior Sam Spangler and Punahou catcher Kaiana Eldredge were drafted in the late rounds, bringing the total of players with local ties to 10.
Spangler was picked in the 41st round (No. 1,245 overall) by the Minnesota Twins, which is much lower than in 2009, when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 20th round.
He’s the fourth UH player taken in the draft, joining Josh Slaats, Greg Garcia and David Freitas.
Spangler finished his junior year 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. He allowed one run in seven innings in starts against Fresno State and The Citadel and struck out 13 in 5 2/3 innings against New Mexico State.
Eldredge was taken in the 48th round by the Cincinnati Reds, joining Mililani’s Keanu Carmichael, Pearl City’s Chase Numata and Campbell’s Charles Kaalekahi as players drafted from local high schools.
