Former Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue was selected today as the newest member of the City Council, succeeding Charles Djou, who was elected to Congress last month. 

Donohue was approved by a unanimous vote to fill the remainder of Djou’s term, which expires Jan. 2.

He was immediately sworn in and seated to take part in today’s meeting, which includes votes on several key measures such as the city’s $1.82 billion operating budget a new property tax rate for nonoccupant homeowners.

A total of 27 candidates had submitted their names for consideration.

Donohue has said he would not seek election to the seat once the term expires. Although it is not required, Council Chairman Todd Apo had said he hoped the Council would follow past practice and select someone who pledged not to run.
