Cement spill, rain slow traffic on freeways
A cement spill along both the H-1 and H-2 freeways and heavy rains slowed traffic in both directions during the morning commute Wednesday.
Traffic continued after the commute in the Ewa direction as state Department of Transportation crews closed lanes to clean up the cement spill. Traffic was also heavy on alternate routes of Kamehameha Highway and Moanalua Road until mid-morning.
A cement truck heading Ewa on the H-1 freeway apparently began spilling its load in the right lane in Pearl City and the spill continued to the H-2 freeway toward Mililani, said Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara.
The spill began at about 3 a.m. Crews responded and used street sweepers and pothole patching trucks to try and clean up the debris.
Traffic backed up in the Ewa direction and the town-bound lanes also backed up early in the morning because of heavy rains, Sakahara said.
The DOT is investigating to determine what company was responsible for the spill.

Police could cite the driver for spilling a load on the freeway, Sakahara said.
