A 4-year-old Maui boy died Tuesday after being struck by a minivan in a roadway in Kaanapali.
Police said a 46-year-old Kaanapali woman was driving a Toyota Sienna at about 8 a.m. when the minivan hit the boy, who was in the road, Hakui Loop, police said.
The boy was taken in critical condition to Maui Medical Center, where he died.
The driver did not report any injuries, according to the Maui Police Department.
It was Maui’s 14th traffic fatality for 2015, compared with 14 at this time last year.
Patient arrested after hospital attack
A 19-year-old patient at the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe was arrested Monday after allegedly attacking a state worker, police said.
The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. on the hospital grounds.
Officers arrested the patient on suspicion of second-degree assault.
He was later released to hospital officials, pending further investigation.
Medical cause cited in driver’s death
An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined that a man who died Saturday after a one-vehicle crash on Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo died from a medical condition.
He has been identified as 61-year-old Thomas Pokorski of Covina, Calif.
Pokorski’s death does not count toward the county’s traffic fatality total.
Another cow caught near Ko Olina on Farrington
Honolulu Police on Monday night corralled another runaway cow on Farrington Highway near Ko Olina.
Police officers closed lanes and rerouted traffic when a cow wandered onto the highway at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.
The incident marked the second time in less than a week that a loose cow has disrupted traffic on the highway.
On Thursday police shot and killed a pregnant cow that wandered onto the highway and displayed aggressive behavior.
Monday’s bovine escapee proved luckier. Police were able to capture the cow after about 30 minutes and took it away in a trailer.
Authorities say two ranchers who own animals in the area were notified.
The pregnant cow’s owner, Bud Gibson, told KHON-TV that the second cow was also his. He says it appears that someone intentionally cut a hole in a fence that keeps his cattle away from the road.
