The Association of Volleyball Professionals tour returns to Hawaii for the first time in more than a decade with Saturday’s AVP Next tournament at Queen’s Beach.
Registration remains open in both men’s and women’s divisions, with entries capped at 24 pairs per gender. Players must be at least 14 years old as of Saturday to enter this open event as well as register for AVP Next membership.
AVP Next is a developmental program of the pro tour that is offering players a chance to accumulate points for national ranking and a wild-card berth into the main draw of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open. The purse is $2,000, split evenly between the two divisions.
Online entries are available at spikeandserve.com. Play is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m., with the finals expected to conclude by 5 p.m.
U.S. loses to Canada in Pan American Games
The U.S. men’s volleyball team squandered a 2-0 lead, falling 19-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-16, 15-12 Tuesday to Canada in the final pool-play match for both teams at the Pan American Games in Toronto.
Former Hawaii All-America middle blocker Taylor Averill had seven kills, two aces and two blocks as the Americans dropped to 1-2 in the pool. Canada (3-0) advances to Friday’s semifinals while the U.S. has a quarterfinal match Wednesday.
UH men’s tennis gets academic nod
The Hawaii men’s tennis team was given academic recognition by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.
It was the fourth straight season the Rainbow Warriors, who had a 3.71 cumulative team GPA, received All-Academic Team honors by the ITA. Individually, Marcel Chan, Carter Lam, Chas Okamoto, Nils Schuhmann and Kai Wehnelt were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Pearl City advances in Little League
Pearl City defeated Kaneohe 10-4 on Tuesday at Kaneohe District Park to win the Little League state championship for 13- to 14-year-olds.
Pearl City advances to a regional in Vancouver, Wash. Play in that regional runs from Aug. 4 to 12.
Hawaii Rush wins national club title
The Hawaii Rush U-13 girls team won the U.S. Club Soccer National Cup XIV Finals championship on Monday in Westfield, Ind.
Hawaii Rush ’02, competing in the Premier Group, defeated Cincinnati United Premier Black 3-0 for the title.
Maui United SC ’01 lost 2-0 to Olympiacos Chicago City Red in the U-14 Boys Super Group.
