KAILUA-KONA >> Backers of a proposed Kona raceway are pushing for the state to pay for an economic impact study after a sound study showed the park would have minimal impact on neighbors.

West Hawaii Today reports that the Hawaii Racing Association will meet with council members and parks and recreation officials in hopes that the county will pay for a study to see how much revenue the Kona Motorsport Park could generate. The study is estimated to cost more than $20,000.

Racing enthusiasts have been trying to build the park for two decades, starting in 1994. The proposed park would have courses and trails for trucks, all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles and would also provide a venue for concerts and car shows.

However some neighbors are unconvinced by the sound study and still don’t want the project in their backyard.
