Federal charges sought in Eric Garner’s chokehold death

NEW YORK » Activists want federal prosecutors to indict the police officer who put a 43-year-old New York City man in a fatal chokehold.

Several hundred people rallied outside the federal courthouse in Brooklyn on Saturday to demand action in the death of Eric Garner.

Garner’s widow, Esaw Garner, said she would never stop fighting for her husband.

It was the second day of protests to mark the anniversary of Garner’s death on July 17, 2014. Garner, who was black, died after a white police officer placed his arm around Garner’s neck to take him to the ground.

A grand jury declined to indict the officer. A federal inquiry is ongoing.

Garner’s family reached a $5.9 million settlement with the city this week.
