Hawaii’s Savana Greene and Peri Green, the defending Hawaii state prep beach girls champions, found success with different partners on the AAU junior tournament sand courts earlier this month in California.
Greene, an incoming sophomore at Punahou, teamed with Lexi McKeown of Laguna Beach, Calif., to place second in the U15 division at the 22nd AAU Junior National Beach Volleyball Championships in Hermosa Beach. Greene-McKeown advanced to the gold-medal match, losing to Hannah Martin-Emily Napoli in the final.
At last weekend’s West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games in Santa Monica, both Greene and Green finished fifth in their respective divisions. Green, an incoming junior at La Pietra, teamed with California’s Pippa Monk-Heinrich in U16 and Greene again paired with McKeown in U15.
Teams medal at HP volleyball championship
Austin Matautia and Justin Kam helped lead the USA Boys Junior A1 Red team to the gold medal at last weekend’s USA Volleyball High Performance in Des Moines, Iowa.
A1 Red defeated A1 Blue, which had Wil Stanley, Kelsey Yogi and Garrison Gabriel, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 in the title match of the international division. Matautia (Moanalua), Stanley (Punahou) and Yogi (Punahou) were named to the all-tournament team.
Avery Enriques (Kamehameha-Hawaii) played for USA Youth Continental Blue, which finished third. Kam plays for Punahou and Gabriel is at Moanalua.
Also taking gold was USA Select Continental Red, with Kanai Akana (Punahou) and Ryan Wilcox (Punahou). The team defeated Continental White, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22 25-18, for the regional youth title.
A number of other Hawaii prep players competed on various team at the High Performance championships that didn’t medal. Representing the Aloha Region on boys teams were Micah Ma‘a (Punahou), Sam Bradley (Punahou), Addie Enriques (Kamehameha-Hawaii), Todd Gruebner (Punahou), Hugh Hogland (‘Iolani), Buddy Scott (Punahou) and Ryan Hong (Punahou).
On girls teams were Zoe Leonard (Kamehameha-Hawaii), Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker (Kamehameha-Hawaii), Samantha Worley (‘Iolani) and Saige Kaahaaina-Torres (‘Iolani).
It was reported earlier that the Aloha Region Black took silver in Girls National Select. Also, Kaiulani Ahuna (Kamehameha-Hawaii) captained the Junior A1 Red team to the gold in the women’s international junior division. Ahuna was named to the all-tournament team.
Chaminade golf receives academic award
The Golf Coaches Association of America recognized Chaminade’s men’s golf program on Wednesday and named the Silverswords to the All-Academic Team for the first time in program history. The squad posted a team GPA of 3.187 for the 2014-15 academic year and was one of 27 Division II teams to be honored.
Tiffin University was named the Division II Academic National Champion, while NAIA’s Embry Riddle Arizona earned the highest GPA out of all divisions with a 3.75.
