Konawaena incoming senior Chanelle Molina, the reigning Star-Advertiser All-State girls basketball player of the year, has committed to Washington State, according to a release from Konawaena coach Bobbie Awa.
According to the release, Molina had received scholarship offers from more than two dozen Division I programs and narrowed her choices to Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona State and Oregon before committing to the Cougars.
Molina, a 5-foot-8 guard/forward, repeated as the Fab 15 Player of the Year after leading the Wildcats to the Division I state championship in February. She averaged 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals per game.
The early signing period for basketball begins Nov. 11.
Washington State has also offered Molina’s sisters, Konawaena junior Celina Jane and sophomore Cherilyn, both Fab 15 players as well. Konawaena graduate Dawnyelle Awa is entering her senior year at Washington State while Lia Galdeira recently announced she will forego her senior year to pursue professional basketball.
U.S. men drop World League match to Brazil
The defemdomg World League champion U.S. men’s national volleyball team lost its final round pool-play opener to host Brazil in four sets Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) was in on three blocks with six digs, and libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) had nine digs in the 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25 defeat. Reserve setter Kawika Shoji did not play.
The U.S. (0-1) must beat France (1-0) on Friday if it hopes to advance from the pool to the semifinals and defend its title. France is on a 15-match World League winning streak including a 3-1 win over Brazil (1-1) Wednesday.
5 Rainbow Wahine earn ITA honors
Five Rainbow Wahine tennis players were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes on Thursday.
Honored are Kealakehe product Daisy Green, a junior; seniors Rebecca Faltusz and Martina Kostalova; junior Sarah Gealer and freshman Victoria Malova. In order to qualify for selection, a player must have a least a 3.5 GPA for the current academic year.
