It was kind of sad to see how sad Maui native and major-league baseball star Shane Victorino was when commenting publicly just after his trade on Monday from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Angels.
The 34-year-old, two-time All-Star who helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2013 and the Philadelphia Phillies do the same in 2008, apparently had wanted to spend the rest of his baseball career with the Red Sox, but it was not to be.
For Hawaii fans of “the Flyin’ Hawaiian,” however, the trade was great news, because now they will be able to watch him fairly regularly on television, since Angels games are broadcast in Honolulu almost on a daily basis during the regular season. (Same with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.)
Maybe knowing his Hawaii fans are watching will perk him up a bit.
Get ready to pay more for your ahi?
Enjoy affordable ahi while you can. Hawaii’s longline fisherman are likely to reach their annual quota for bigeye tuna from their most productive fishing grounds west of the islands three months earlier than last year, thanks to lower limits and exceptional hauls early in the season. Lower take limits can be hard on fishermen who make their living at sea, but they are necessary to preserve sustainable marine ecosystems. Overfishing is a real problem, including in Pacific waters.
