Oahu parking and traffic restrictions will be in place for the holiday weekend in Lanikai and on Lagoon Drive.
Parking will not be allowed on the right side of the road in Lanikai, and access to Lagoon Drive adjacent to Honolulu Airport also will be restricted.
Parking in Lanikai was curtailed over Memorial Day and Presidents Day after traffic congestion on Christmas trapped hundreds of people in a bumper-to-bumper snarl. The neighborhood was inundated with overflow traffic from Lanikai and Kailua beachgoers.
City transportation crews will place barriers adjacent to the bike lane on the Lanikai loop — which includes Aalapapa Drive and Mokulua Drive — notifying motorists that parking is not permitted on the right side of the drives, where a bike lane runs. Parking in the bike lane is always prohibited, with a potential fine of $200. Motorists should also not drive on the bike lane, stop and/or unload people or equipment.
Motorists who park on the right side of the Lanikai loop Friday through Sunday or stop or unload in the bike lane will be subject to citation and/or towing.
The state Department of Transportation said Thursday that access to Lagoon Drive will be restricted makai of Aolele Street from 6 p.m. Saturday evening to 2 a.m. Sunday.
Sheriff’s deputies will be operating a security checkpoint on Lagoon Drive, allowing access only to those authorized, and patrols of area streets will be conducted throughout the night.
