Aside from a few sites still to be finalized, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association has set the state tournament schedule for the upcoming school year.
The state tournament slate begins with the Civilian Marksmanship Air Riflery Championship on Oct. 27 at Kamehameha-Maui and ends with a hectic first week of May, with all 12 spring championships scheduled to be awarded between May 3 and 7.
HHSAA executive director Chris Chun said with the public school calendar ending a week earlier than this past year, the 2016 spring tournaments were scheduled for early May to avoid possible conflicts with final exams and graduations.
The HHSAA is still finalizing sites for cross country and swimming and diving, both of which will be held on Maui, tennis (Big Island) and track and field (Oahu).
The fall schedule concludes with the Division I and II football championship doubleheader set for Nov. 20 at Aloha Stadium.
In February, the girls basketball tournaments will be split between Oahu (Division I) and the Big Island (Division II) and six tournaments (wrestling, D-I and D-II girls soccer, swimming and diving and D-I and D-II boys basketball) are scheduled for the week ending Feb. 20.
In the spring, the Division I softball tournament is tentatively scheduled for May 4-7 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. But Chun said he is awaiting the release of the University of Hawaii softball team’s Big West schedule and the tournament could move back a week depending on the availability of RWSS. The Division II tournament will be held at Patsy Mink Softball Stadium on Maui.
The Division I baseball tournament will be held at Iron Maehara Stadium on Maui, with Division II set for Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Absent from this year’s schedule are the regional formats used in recent years. The boys and girls volleyball and soccer tournaments return to the traditional four-day schedules after being split over two weekends last season.
A regional format for softball was approved on a trial basis by the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association last month, but the HHSAA executive board voted to hold off on implementing the format.
