Winning sakes sampled with joy
The Joy of Sake returns July 31 to the Hawaii Convention Center, just days after the U.S. National Sake Appraisal team selects gold and silver award winners.
This year’s sampling features some 390 sakes from more than 150 breweries, including sakes in the ultra-premium daiginjo category and a namazake (unpasteurized sake) pour station. The winning labels also will be available for tasting.
More than half the sakes at the event are not sold in the U.S.
Among the restaurants offering dishes are some that have yet to open their doors: Hale Ohuna, Lee Anne Wong’s noodle and sake bar; Chris Kajioka’s latest project; and SKY Waikiki, Lance Kosaka’s rooftop bar and lounge. Migrant Maui, with chef Sheldon Simeon, and the newly opened Mud Hen Water will also serve food.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m.; tickets are $95. Early access tickets, at $145, allow entry at 5:30 p.m. Visit joyofsakehonolulu.eventbrite.com.
If you can’t make Honolulu’s event, the Joy of Sake will also be held in Las Vegas on Sept. 19 and Tokyo on Nov. 5. Visit joyofsake.com.
Sheraton presents Chef’s Table finale
In October, Sheraton Waikiki’s senior executive sous chef Colin Hazama launched the Chef’s Table and Farm Tour series that featured six local farms — Ho Farms, Naked Cow Dairy, Shinsato Farms, Nalo Farms, Twin Bridge Farms and Wailea Agriculture on Hawaii island.
Now, as a grand finale to the series, Hazama is creating a dinner 6 p.m. July 31 featuring items from all the farms, followed the next day by a tour of the Kapiolani Community College farmers market and lunch.
The dinner menu includes Sweet Lanai Ama Ebi, Shinsato Farms Head Cheese Pork Tonkatsu, Taste of Ho Farms Salad, Deconstructed Hawaiian Ciopinno, Slow Cooked Molokai Venison and a couple of desserts.
Farmers from each of the six farms will be in attendance at the KCC market the next day. Purchases from the day will benefit KCC’s culinary program.
Dinner is $120, $150 with wine pairing. The KCC market tour and lunch is $100, $120 with wine. Both events are $190 or $220 with wine. Reserve a spot at 921-4600. Visit flavorsofhawaii.com.
