Just two months after losing one of its longtime paddlers, coaches and race organizers, Hui Nalu Canoe Club made sure to honor the late Chris Baird by notching a convincing victory at the regatta he helped perpetuate.
Hui Nalu used a consistent all-around performance to claim the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s John D. Kaupiko Regatta held Sunday in the calm waters of Kaneohe Bay adjacent to Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
The annual regatta is named after Lukela Kaupiko, an experienced waterman who coached Hui Nalu beginning in the 1930s and was nicknamed “John D.” by Waikiki Beach Boys comparing him to John D. Rockefeller. As it was explained in accounts provided by the club, Kaupiko was always well dressed and drove a nice car.
Baird served as the Kaupiko Regatta race chairman for more than 15 years and the paddlers and coaches of host club Hui Nalu, the two-time defending OHCRA champion, honored their deceased clubmate by claiming a fourth AAA Division (27-39 crews entered) title of the season.
Hui Nalu notched the overall regatta win with 183 points coming from 13 race victories. Hui Nalu held off Outrigger (158 points), Kailua (157 points) and Lanikai (139 points) in the large division.
“It feels really good to get this win, especially with it being our club’s regatta,” said Hui Nalu steerswoman Maggie Twigg-Smith. “We’re honoring Chris Baird today. He was an integral member of Hui Nalu. He was instrumental in getting this location for us to race at, so it’s awesome to get the win today and do so at ‘Chris’ Race.’ ”
Twigg-Smith helped guide Hui Nalu’s junior women to victory in their 1-mile race, during which the crew posted a mark of 8 minutes and 59.93 seconds. The crew, which also included Mehana Horner, Kaulu Luuwai, Mary Ann Kawakami, Pua Kaaihue and Rachel Fujita, fended off runners-up Outrigger (9:03.80) and Kailua (9:09.38).
Prior to the men’s 50 race, which Baird would have been a part of, a moment of silence was observed in his honor. Paddlers on the starting line raised their paddles in respect for Baird, and in what proved to be the “chickenskin” moment of the afternoon, a brief rain shower ensued.
Hui Nalu honored its teammate by winning the men’s 50 race, a half-mile event, in 3 minutes and 46.70 seconds to end Lanikai’s (3:49.04) undefeated streak in that particular event that had spanned nearly four years.
The crew of Raven Aipa, Timothy Twigg-Smith, Daniel Sheard, Jeff Cummings, Damon Sweazy and Les Look competed in Hui Nalu’s seldom-used koa canoe named Maika‘i Roa, a vessel built for calm waters and straightaway sprints.
“To beat Lanikai today was very special for us,” said Look, the winning crew’s steersman. “We raced in (Baird’s) honor today and it worked out.”
Through 28 races, Hui Nalu established a sizable 128-101-100 advantage over Kailua and Outrigger. Ten races later, Hui Nalu had maintained its margin over Outrigger and Kailua with a 171-148-135 spread and would not relinquish the lead.
Sunday’s venue provided a change of scenery for the regatta that was formerly held at Keehi Lagoon until returning to the base four seasons ago after a two-decade-long absence.
Paddlers raced along a course running parallel to both a pier used by the Marines for loading jet fuel and a major runway used by military aircraft.
Unlike other windward venues used by OHCRA — Kailua and Waimanalo beaches — the waters of Kaneohe Bay are protected by the base’s peninsula, and allowed for uniform calm conditions across all lanes of the race course, which is regarded by many paddlers as one of the fairest in the state.
“It’s a very fair course. The water depth is consistent, the wind is consistent,” Maggie Twigg-Smith said. “At a lot of other venues, the lane you’re in plays a larger role in how well you do.”
Paddlers braved humid, sticky conditions and light sea breezes throughout Sunday’s regatta as nearly 3,300 competitors ranging in age from 12-and-under to 65-and-above represented OHCRA’s 18 member clubs in 43 races spanning a quarter mile to 1.5 miles.
Keahiakahoe (52 points) claimed the AA division (14-26 crews entered) title, edging Hui Lanakila (51 points) and Healani (50 points), while Waimanalo (27 points) claimed the A division (1-13 crews entered) trophy ahead of Leeward Kai (19 points) and New Hope (13 points).
In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews continued to qualify for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 1 at Hilo Bay. The top five crews from each OHCRA event earn automatic berths in the state race based on cumulative point standings.
OHCRA returns to action on Sunday at Keehi Lagoon for its championship regatta. Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a also wraps up its regular season on Saturday with its championship regatta at Keehi Lagoon.
“We need to keep training hard and staying hungry,” said Twigg-Smith, looking ahead to the upcoming OHCRA and state championships. “Working together is the key.”
