Hawaii incoming senior guard Destiny King scored 19 points, but it was not enough, as American Samoa fell to Fiji 75-61 in the Pacific Games gold medal women’s basketball game Saturday in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
King and Rheina Ale combined to score 28 of American Samoa’s 33 first-half points; King and Ale posted 12 and 16 points, respectively, in the first frame.
Fiji, which finished the competition undefeated, also had won the pool-play game between the two countries, 81-73.
King scored in double figures in every game for American Samoa (4-2), which went 0-6 four years ago in Nomea, New Caledonia.
Hawaii track trio competes at Worlds
A trio of current and former Hawaii track and field athletes competed Saturday at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea.
Madara Apine of Latvia placed fifth in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 13.56 meters. In the women’s shot put, TeRina Keenan of New Zealand placed seventh with a throw of 15.39 and Canada’s Alex Porlier Langlois finished 10th with a throw of 14.73.
Apine and Keenan finished their eligibility at Hawaii in 2012. Porlier Langlois will be a senior at UH in the fall.
Black and Coel to speak at QB Club
Bruce Ridgely Black, a member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and canoe paddling coach and champion, and Dr. Rachel Coel, medical director at the Queens Hospital Center for Sports Medicine, will speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s Monday luncheon.
The Quarterback Club meets at the Maple Garden Restaurant. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon.
